Selling on your own website and social media

Selling on your own website allows you complete freedom in pricing and displaying your clothes. You can design the entire site around the image you want to create for your label.

With so many website builders and templates available, it is easier than ever for you to design your own site, or find a friend to help.

Your social media will be the best marketing for your website. Use your Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat photos to display your designs, use hashtags for more exposure, and link your social media accounts to your website.

Use search engine optimization (SEO) to ensure your site shows up in a Google search for your type of products. Luckily, most of the popular website builders like Squarespace and Wix offer wizards to guide you through this process, even if you have a free website account. If you’re not familiar with these techniques, you probably know someone who is. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember you have a valuable product to trade for services. Do you have a tech-savvy friend who would help with your website in exchange for one of your creations?

Selling on online auction sites

Listing your apparel on internet auction sites, like eBay or Etsy, can help you sell merchandise, bring visitors to your website, and increase customer recognition of your brand. You don’t need to carry a large inventory to sell at these sites because you can list each piece individually. Most auction sites have templates you can use to set up your listings.

Many people come to online auction websites looking for bargains, so you may not be able to charge full retail price for your apparel. You have to pay a listing fee, and if you do make a sale, you may have to pay part of the final value on top of that. Even if you don’t want to offer your whole line this way, online auctions can be a good way to clear out old merchandise or pieces with sizing or construction flaws. If you are selling seconded inventory, be sure to describe the piece thoroughly so you don’t compromise your brand’s reputation.

Selling on other sites as an affiliate

As a new designer, you may not get enough traffic to your own website. You might increase your sales by selling as an affiliate on a more established and popular site. Think about the fashion blogs you follow. Is there a blogger who seems like a good fit with your line? Ask if they will link your site. It may take a free sample to get them interested in your product, but if they like your designs it may be worth it. Find out in advance if the host site will take a percentage of the sales price.
